On the Road

I want to apologize to all Americans, we gave you Nickelback, and I'm deeply sorry about that... So here's something which will make you forgive Nickelback, and when we burned your Withehouse down :P (check out Wikipedia if you're doubting about it).

I like to describe Sam Roberts musical style as folk rock. Folk music has a special place in my heart, and it's travelling. It makes me wanna quit everything and go explore the world. Folk music has been part of American history, when hobos were jumping on train wagons and discovering the gorgeous landscapes of the great North America. If this does inspire you, I strongly suggest you to check out this book: On the Road, written by Jack Kerouac. I'd love to leave that road modern society traced for us, and just enjoy life, instead of pursue my studies for 2 more years and work hard all my life long. Easy to say, but it's such a strong psychological barrier to enforce. In the same order of ideas, here's another recommendation: the movie Into the Wild, should inspire you too. I should post some of my favorite folk bands in the coming weeks, stay tunes if you like the following.

Bridge to Nowhere - Sam Roberts
Uprising Down Under - Sam Roberts

Canadian Dream - Sam Roberts

Sweet as a pint of Guiness

My roommate recently realized that how lucky Irish are: their National Day is celebrated in lots of country actually. Funny though, I recently read that traditionally, in Ireland, St. Patrick is devoted to go to church and spend time with your family. In America, it's an occasion for a huge party in the streets of the cities and for everybody to get drunk... Well, whatever, to me, an occasion to party is always a great reason to party, and when it comes to Irish and drinking habits, I'm be glad to be there!

Another proof of the integration of Irish culture in America, the birth of bands like Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys, which I love though. They makes me feel like I've got some of their culture deep inside, or maybe I'm just wishing to, but it would explain my drinking habits :D Their musical culture have, in facts, some common points with ours (the French Canadian one), which are reflected in our traditional music. Even if living hard times, our songs we're about enjoying life's gifts, don't worrying too much, hope, parties and alcohol. We knew that whatever could happen, there always was a place to get drunk with good friends and family and enjoy ourselves. Today's the perfect occasion to post a few of my favorites song of them. St. Partick is a occasion for everybody to release the little Irish in them, and I will. Happy St. Patrick's day folks!

The Worst Day Since Yesterday - Flogging Molly

If I Ever Leave This World Alive - Flogging Molly

The Dirty Glass - Dropkick Murphys

Kiss Me, I'm Shitfaced - Dropkick Murphys

A simple post for simple people

I'll keep it simple tonight. Here's 3 random great tracks from my library.

You Go On Ahead - Sunset Rubdown
Whatever You Like (T.I. Cover) - Anya Marina

Empire State of Mind - Jay-Z

Musical dopamine

Couldn't have forgotten to post a few tracks from Crystal Castles, would have been unfair. Although they still pretty underground, this Ontario based group is slowly gaining popularity around the world.

Discovered Crystal Castles something like 2 years ago, from a girl I used to frequent, and God might tell me when I'll die why they're the ones who know the right tunes to hook me in ...
Crystal Castles is one of the band that I often forget, due to the massive inflow of music I discover every week, but that I rediscover with oh so much pleasure. Their original sound always find a way through my mind to hit my nerve center and release what I like to call "musical dopamine", what I think "pop music" does not have at all (happens exceptionally). It's like a book; sometimes, after having read a whole page of one of those boring school books, you realize you did not get anything from the message sent to you; you don't even remember a line of it... But if you fall on a great novel, you'll probably keep reading cause you always need more. The same is true with music; it will often pass trough your mind, letting you indifferent as a grape in a vineyard.

When listening to Crystal Castles, this is not happening. I get hooked, every time, by the simplest "double-octave" bass lines, the straight continuous drum beats and the melodic, entertaining keyboard riffs. For those who are wondering, the original sound comes from the bright idea of modeling Atari's sounds with a keyboard.

Crystal Castles first made their name with their electro-trash unique style, but don't get fooled, they do compose great vibe tunes too. Here are a few of my favorite tracks, plus, a bonus: the Omnibus mix, which makes an awesome exposition of Crystal Castles original tracks and remixes.

Voodoo Rhythm

Ever heard about Psychobilly? It the result from a collision between apolitical punks which philosophy was something like "If there's not futur, let's just enjoy right now!" who met good old Rockabilly. Also often mixed with horror stories influenced by those awesome B-Movies. You feel like these bands are frozen between 60s and 80s, and God I love it!

Discovered psychobilly 4 years ago, with Tiger Army. Psychobilly was in fact much more popular in Europe, but is gaining America. Psychobilly have his own personnal flavor, usually composed of so entertaining drums riffs, a slapping double bass and a single wild driven guitar. I've been for a long time disappointed that this kind of music was still very underground, as punk rock is now pretty popular, but things are moving now. So here's a sample of my 2 favorite bands, The Meteors and Nekromantix, which I think will always stay fresh and will never bore me.

S/M - Nekromantix

Nice day for a resurrection - Nekromantix

Ghoulina - Nekromantix

Graveyard in your memory - Nekromantix

Voodoo Rhythm - The Meteors

Love You to Death - The Meteors

Another Half Hour Till Sunrise - The Meteors

My Daddy is a Vampire - The Meteors

Kiss me Dead

Isn't great when you stumble upon an old CD you haven't listened in a while. That kind of CD you bought years ago and listened sooooo many times, enough to have memories burnt in it. Well, it kind of happened to me, except it was by the grace of my iTunes shuffle and it's only been 6 month I've discovered this band. Anyway, here's some great tunes I have myself hard times to describe. Some kind of 80s psychedelic modern indie sound. The band is called Magic Wands... Now up to you to make your own opinion.

Teenage Love

Kiss me Dead

Black Magic

Let me Snow, Let me Snow, Let me Snow

Sunny weather outside, not a cloud in sight and an average -2 °C: I'm heading to the mountain! Music is mandatory for Snowboarding. Great snowboard movie includes great soundtrack (I like Isenseven for that), and a good ride is always better with a great playlist. It kind of catches the moment. Here's a little overview of what I like to listen on my board.

Have a Cigar - Pink Flyod --¨¨--_--¨¨--> Let's ride some fresh pillows

At first, I was riding to the original. Then, I discovered this cover.

House of the rising sun - Muse

The Rolling Stones are a must in each and every rinding playlist.

Gimme Shelter

Give.it.up.for.sound (SymboleOne Remix) - Nid & Sancy

This one's from the intro of Neverland by Absinth Films. This is the best intro I've seen so far, it worth the whole movie :) Try really hard to figure what would Paradise resemble if God was a rider, then you'll get that intro. I seriously wish this is what Paradise looks like. Tried to find it on Youtube, sorry, but unavailable.

Baba O'Riley - The Who

Stormy High - Black Mountain

There is a lot left to post (my playlist is about 356 five tracks). Stay tune and Enjoy!

So you like Rock'n'Roll...

Don't have much to say about this one, just love this song and feel like I gotta post it. Pretty simple, but really great and entertaining. This is to me the best song from the Subways. Like some other bands, their early songs are the best ones. Can't tell why...

1 am - The Subways

Rock'n'Roll Queen - The Subways

Explode or die

Staying in the instrumental section, here's a mind blowing song I discovered in "Fully Flared", from Lakai. What they did with it is, to my opinion, absolutely awesome...

Song title is "Lower your eyelids to die with the Sun" by M83. Another song with a smooth beginning, then comes the drum kicking in, like an heavenly explosion of happiness and glory. The feeling you must have from breaking in through the wall on this song looks simply ecstatic. It's funny though, cause this song was played by my iTunes shuffle when I woke up this morning, and this is straight going into my "morning alarm playlist".

If you started liking explosion as I do, then you'll be glad of what's coming next: my personal collection of outbursting songs.

Limbs by Agalloch

A poor man's memory by Explosions in the Sky

Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Greet Death by Explosions in the Sky

Your Hand in Mine by Explosions in the Sky

See me waving

I've been flowed in a wave of Dubstep in the last few weeks, thanks to the girl who brought this to my ears, and here's the best I've gotten out of it.

Mt Eden got me right to the heart with his slow motion deep bass riffs. I particularly like the 54th second of Beautiful Lies, when the bass kicks in. If a picture worth a thousand words, music often does not need any lyrics to be meaningful. I wish theses tunes could be waved underwater, the result would be awesome, probably resulting in some kind of dolphin language.
I strongly suggest you to explode your Equalizer bass frequencies, then, enjoy.

Beautiful Lies - Mt Eden

Sierra Leone - Mt Eden

Peace Through Music

Hippies are not dead! But, seriously, that movement is great and deserve your attention.
"Peace through music", it says it all.

The Hangover

Oh my god, yesterday's was one of those night when you get into the bar with a hundred bucks, then you wake up and wonder why...

I think there's a song for every occasion, that's why I love music! As drugs do amplify your feelings, music can do the same. So here I come with a few songs (I would post them all if I could) of a great band from Montreal that mixed folk, punk and country together to come out with the sound of Yesterday's Ring. As drinking has been part of their life, they are the perfect band to accompany your nights at the barroom... and when you wake up with the best hangover ever (Yes, I do have great hangovers. Every morning I wake up and still drunk, I feel accomplished and like last night was a great night). You know, when you feel feed up by the life, but you remember (or sometimes not...) the good times you just had drinking with your good friends, and you have that mix of whiskey and nostalgia that flow through your veins. So here are a few of my favorite hangover songs.

J'aurais jamais pensé faire une chanson pour faire pleurer les mères by Yesterday's Ring
Another Bad Country Song by Yesterday's Ring

El Rancho by Yesterday's Ring
